NAME THE TEAM ENTERS FINAL PHASE Thursday 9th February 2012
After two weeks, over 300 entries from at home and abroad and judges’ deliberations to select a top-eight list, the name the Antigua & Barbuda football team contest is in the final phase.
From today until midnight on Sunday, people will have the chance to text to vote to choose the final name.
The names are: Beach Boys, Benna Boys, Benna Rebels, Black Ants, Iron Bandits, Wadadli Jam Bulls, The Party Crashers and Rhythm Warriors
People should text their choice to 774-3307. Voting is open around the clock.
The contest began by inviting submissions along with a brief rationale to the Antigua & Barbuda Football Association (ABFA).
“We were overwhelmed by the response,” General Secretary of the ABFA Gordon “Banks” Derrick said. “We anticipated maybe 50 to 60 submissions, but in the end we were able to compile a list of more than 300 names, and that count does not include the names that we received more than once. In those instances, we recorded the submission that came in first.”
Spokespersons of the ABFA will make the media rounds during the voting period, starting with an appearance on Good Morning JoJo at 8 am today; Your View on ZDK at 8:30 am also today; Sports Talk on OBSERVER Radio at 6:30 pm tonight; Vybz FM with Ibis on Friday evening ; and in the Snake Pit on OBSERVER Radio on Saturday afternoon.
The rationales submitted for the names will form part of the radio discussion.
“As we’ve said repeatedly, the national team’s FIFA World Cup 2014 campaign is a national effort, and we want all of Antigua & Barbuda to collaborate to choose the moniker by which the team will be known,” Derrick said.
“At the end of the day, we want a name that speaks to our tenacity and heart on the field, but we also want a name that lends itself to our overall marketability as a tourism destination,” he added.
The winning name will be announced early next week
