DEPARTMENT OF YOUTH AFFAIRS TO HOST ANTIGUA & BARBUDA YOUTH AWARDS 2011
Friday 25th November 2011

We are Antigua and Barbuda!

It is no secret that there are talented young men and women in Antigua and Barbuda, making valuable contributions every day. Unfortunately, these youth are often overlooked, and attention is directed towards those who are involved with less favourable activities.

As part of its goal to engender a positive youth culture and raise national awareness regarding the contributions of youth, the Department of Youth Affairs has instituted the National Youth Awards. This year, the National Youth Awards, one of the flagship events of the Department of Youth Affairs, will be held on the 26th November 2011, at the Precision Centre. The event is held in recognition of the sterling contributions by youth, as well as to those who work for their welfare and development.

The National Youth Awards will be given to those youth who have made noteworthy achievements in a number of fields, including: media, agriculture, tourism, cultural and performing arts, literature, visual art, professional service, entrepreneurship, community service and education, youth activism and youth pioneering efforts. Also, awards will be given to those adults and corporate citizens who have made contributions towards the youth population in Antigua and Barbuda.

The Department of Youth Affairs wishes to extend congratulations to all thirty six (36) awardees and hopes that these will be an inspiration for others over the coming years to work towards the development of young people in Antigua and Barbuda.

Also at the Awards, the two Barbudan youth representatives, Amelia Beazer and Xavier Bradley will receive Instruments of Appointment as National Youth Ambassadors.

Ambassador Jameel Lee will also receive special commendations for contribution to national, regional and international youth development. Jameel served as an ambassador from 2006 to 2011.

This year’s feature address will be delivered by Karen-Mae Hill, Rhodes Scholar and lawyer.
