GOLDSMITTY BOOK SEMI-FINAL SPOT IN WARRIORS CUP 2010
Monday 23rd August 2010

Premier Division contenders Goldsmitty have virtually assured themselves a semi-final berth when they won their second Group B game in the Open championship division of the sixth annual Warriors Cup sponsored by Harney Motors, Cool & Smooth and APUA PCS INET.

The St Claire ‘Nashie’ Christian-coached side hammered Guydadli 5-1 Sunday night at YASCO to move to the top of their group with six points from two matches after they defeated 5Ps 2-0 on Friday.

Omari Corbett scored a brace of goals while Nandino McCalmah and Darrel Martin supported with one each. Guydadli, who scored a legitimately goal through Brian Ocho, added to their misery when they conceded an own goal in the injury time.

Group B’s runners-up will become clearer on Tuesday when Bullets, who drew with Guydadli in their first match, take on 5Ps at 5:30pm.

Hosts Young Warriors moved to the top of the standings in Group A with four points after a competitive 1-1 draw with Greenbay Hoppers in Sunday’s second match.
After conceding an own goal on the stroke of half-time, Warriors hit back to equalise early in second half when Tnoy Andrew scored his fourth goal in two matches following his hat-trick on the first night of the tournament.

Villa Lions occupy second place in the Group A following a 3-1 win against Young Boys on Saturday night. Akeem Lee, Mitchell Francis and Michael Roberts netted for the Lions while Omari Henry scored his second of the tournament for Young Boys who next play on Tuesday at 7pm against Hoppers who have one point.

In the age-categories, Future Kings of Pigotts, CPTSA Wings, Villa Lions and Young Warriors enjoyed success over the weekend.

On Sunday, Villa secured wins in the U13 and U15 categories defeating Willikies 3-1 and Young Warriors 3-0 in the respective age groups. Future Kings won 2-0 over Wings who had defeated Villa 2-0 the previous day in the U13s.

In the Under 17 division, national team player Romario Brathwaite netted twice to spur Warriors to their second win of the competition, defeating Empire 2-1 on Saturday.
In the lone female game so far, Ottos Tigress defeated Police 1-0 thanks to a strike from national team player Argell London.

Organisers say St Maarten, the only overseas team, will join the tournament on Thursday and will play their first match that day against the runners-p of Group B.
