NEARLY TWO HUNDRED ANTIGUAN CYCLIST RODE FOR A WORTHY CAUSE
Monday 17th September 2012

Nearly 200 Cyclists of all shapes, sizes and ages congregated at the Sandals Grand Antigua Resort and Spa on Sunday 16th September from 7:00 am to commence the 3rd annual Sandals Foundation Trans-Antigua Cycle Challenge.

This 22 mile race from Sandals Grand Antigua to Grand Pineapple was a grueling trek for most of the racers who consisted of amateur cyclists, professionals and basically anyone who owned a bike.

This family-fun event which is held in collaboration with the Antigua Barbuda Amateur Cycle Association raised funds for various Sandals Foundation community projects which include the construction of a lunch room at the Willikie’s Primary School.

Price Water House Coopers (Diamond sponsor) and Rock Star energy drink, two new sponsors alongside our usual sponsors added to the success of this year’s Cycle Challenge. According to Sandals Hotel Manager, Matthew Cornall, “this year the Sandals Foundation is excited to have the addition of two new sponsors: Price Water House Coopers as our Diamond sponsor and Rock Star Energy Drink.

The foundation is very thankful to all of our sponsors and we are also pleased with the public support of this charitable event in which all proceeds go towards the Willikie’s Primary School projects”.

The race ended at the festive Grand Pineapple Resort where cyclists were welcomed with music and complimentary refreshments.

Many prizes such as tours, day passes, trophies and medals were given for various fun activities. Although it was not a competition, the Sandals Foundation awarded cyclists from various categories such as youngest cyclist, oldest cyclist, most courageous, Tortoise Award for last place, etc. in an effort to say thank you and encourage others to join in next year’s event.

The organisors of the event are very happy and would like to say a big thank you to all those who participated and volunteered.
