TRANS-ANTIGUA HALF MARATHONThursday 4th November 2010
The Sandals Foundation which is the philanthropic arm of Sandals Resorts International is organizing a sporting event called the Trans-Antigua Half Marathon. This fundraising event will take place on Sunday, December 5, 2010.
The Sandals Foundation operating, in this case, out of Sandals Grande Antigua has managed to secure Air Canada Vacations as the major sponsor for this event. The organizing committee for the Trans-Antigua half-Marathon has partnered with the Antigua and Barbuda Triathlon Association in order to capitalize on their expertise. They also happen to be the beneficiary of a portion of the funds raised. The ultimate objective of this event is to help partially fund a program to develop a group of at least 10 young athletes in the triathlon or long distance running disciplines so that they can compete at the international level and put themselves in medal contention.
With Air Canada Vacations on board as a diamond sponsor, Sandals has also arranged for Canadian single leg amputee world record holder, Rick Ball to come down for the run with a message to the community of “if I can do it anybody can.” Ball has reached celebrity status in Canada and his popularity is growing globally.
The event is an official half-marathon at 13.1 miles and has shorter distances of 5km and 10km. Starting at Sandals Grande Antigua on the West Coast of the Island, and finishing on the eastern side at our sister property, Grand Pineapple Beach Resort. This is an event for Antiguans, by Antiguans which will benefit our Island and our wonderful children.
