The management and staff of the Antigua and Barbuda Hospitality Training Institute are extremely elated due to the great success that the ABHTI Team BBQ Soul Food continues to achieve.

During the Kraft Foods Annual Smoking Hot BBQ Challenge competition that was held at the Institute on Sunday June 03, 2012, the ABHTI Team Soul Food  which consisted of team leader and Instructor Chef kahyeme Benjamin, students Eustace Cabral, Michael Prince, Zillah Lindsay and Matara Murphy, were very successful in capturing several prizes to include the following;

1st place in the Poultry Category
2nd place in the Brisket Category

3rd in the Dessert Category

Team Soul Food was declared overall winner of the day’s event from among several teams from hotels, restaurants, companies, friends and families, they were then given the honour of representing Antigua & Barbuda at the 5th Annual Cattlemen Caribbean BBQ Competition, which was held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, June 30 – July 01, 2012.

The ABHTI Team Soul Food flew off to San Juan with great anticipation and excitement to compete once again.  The categories they competed in were the Beef, Brisket, Chicken, Ribs, BBQ Sauce and Pork Butts competition. The ABHTI Team Soul Food was once again a winner.  The Team won a gold medal for the Best BBQ Sauce. The Team also won one year’s supply of Pork Butts. They had everyone going wild about their Spicy Mango & Pineapple Sauce, which was every bit of the crowd  and judge’ s favourite. Chef Benjamin and the members of his team would like to extend great thanks and appreciation to everyone who in any way assisted them.

Particularly they would like to thank our partners from Jumby Bay, and their team to include  Mrs. Leisa McDonald, the Human Resources Manager and their Sous Chef Charlesworth Jeremy, for all their assistance at the competition in San Juan. Thanks to LIAT for the donation of return tickets to Puerto Rico. Special thanks to Sandals Grand Resorts & Spa and Carlisle Bay for their assistance.
Our ABHTI Team Soul Food now has their eyes set on competing Internationally. They are looking forward to participating in the Tennessee Cattleman International  BBQ Competition, which will be held in Tennessee in October 2012.
