DURAN DURAN TO RETURN TO ANTIGUA
Tuesday 15th November 2011

While residents and visitors are still abuzz about the launch of Antigua and Barbuda’s first Film Festival, the famous group Duran Duran has announced plans to return to the island to conduct an extensive film shoot.

Antigua and Barbuda was the set for the video Rio by Duran Duran, released on Nov 1, 1982, which is one of the band's most recognizable songs, mostly due to this famous music video, which is widely regarded as symbolic of 1980s glamour and excess.

"Rio" featured iconic images of the band in designer suits, singing and playing around on a yacht speeding over the crystal blue Caribbean Sea surrounding the island of Antigua. Short segments show band members trying to live out their assorted daydreams, only to be teased, tormented, and made fools of by a body-painted vixen Reema Ruspoli.

Shot over the course of three days in May 1982, the yacht scenes were filmed on the bay at English Harbour, the beach scenes at Miller's by the Sea at Fort James and the scenes with the raft at Shirley Heights. While in Antigua, the band also filmed a video for the album track "Waiting for the Nightboat", which appeared with "Rio" and nine other videos on the Duran Duran video album released in 1983.

Duran Duran was among the first bands to have their videos shot by professional directors with 35 mm film movie cameras which gave their videos a more polished look. These exotic locales in Antigua helped to create memorable images that were radically different from the then-common low budget "band-playing-on-a-stage" videos. Rather than simply playing their instruments, the band participated in mini-storylines, often taking inspiration from contemporary movies: the song Hungry Lakethe Wolf riffs on Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Videos were already headed in this direction, but Duran Duran led the trend with a style, featuring quick editing, arresting graphic design, and surreal-to-nonsensical image inserts, that drew attention from commentators and spawned a wealth of imitators.

Rio ranked #1 in the "Top 20 Most-Played Albums of 1982" by CMJ. The album is also included in the book '1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die'.

Duran Duran is currently on their All You Need Is Now tour to support their new album. In a recent interview on FUSE TV, the band announced that they visited the destination last year and reconnected with the owner of the classic yacht used in the Rio. They are considering returning to Antigua and Barbuda to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Rio and to do some more exciting filming throughout the destination.
