ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA RANKED AS TOP CARIBBEAN HONEYMOON SPOT
Tuesday 14th June 2011

As the destination celebrates the fifth year of the June is Romance Month promotion, BRIDES Magazine has ranked Antigua and Barbuda among the top 10 Honeymoon Destinations in the Caribbean. Last week, BRIDES magazine announced their list of the world's top 20 honeymoon destinations and 10 Caribbean romance retreats made the list.

The announcement was made in the June Issue of the A & Buzz, a monthly newsletter distributed by Antigua and Barbuda’s US and Canadian tourism offices to valued travel professionals throughout North America.  The Buzz newsletter covers the 2011 Romance promotions and highlights activities, sponsors and celebrity guests from the past 5 years. The A & B Buzz also provides novel themes to exchange nuptials, love tokens and unique gifts that are locally made and romantic spots for couples’ to get the best photo or enjoy play dates.
The June is Romance Promotion launched in 2006, was designed to drive high profile and profitable romance business to the destination with off-season tourism specials romance-themed deals and offers for wedding, honeymoons and couples’ retreats. Over the years, the program has highlighted Antigua and Barbuda’s competitive advantage of not requiring residency for couples to get married.

US Director of Tourism, Derede Samuel-Whitlock, believes that despite budget limitations, the Romance promotion has gained momentum and the destination is being recognized for some of the elements that make it a premier destination for weddings and honeymoons.. “The recognition of the destination by BRIDES Magazine comes at an opportune time as we celebrate June as the Month of Romance and this accolade will help reinforce our core message. We will continue to generate media attention by highlighting unique attributes of the destination and some “off the beaten path experiences” for couples who may already be thinking outside the traditional wedding box.”

The Celebrity Destination wedding has been a highlight of the program and each year, a lucky couple receives an all expenses paid wedding through the support of sponsors and stakeholders. This year’s program will feature two weddings, an engagement announcement and the launch of the Barbuda Moons Program that positions the destination as offering a two island experience, placing greater emphasis on Barbuda as a key romance offering.

There has also been a greater focus on education and awareness to better understand weddings and honeymoons as a lucrative niche market. In May, a cross section of stakeholders involved in the sales and marketing, planning and execution of weddings and honeymoons came to together for a roundtable discussion with the main goal of establishing dialogue to better align in-market sales and promotions with local operations and service delivery.  During this Romance Roundtable, a panel of industry experts from the United States and Canada reviewed best practices, market performance and competitive threats in the weddings and honeymoon market.

Earlier this year, Antigua and Barbuda was also featured in BRIDES  Magazine’s “Best 25 Beaches in the World.” Dickenson Bay was ranked as having “Best Water sports” and Palmetto Point in Barbuda was ranked as “Best for Seclusion.” BRIDES Magazine, with a current circulation of over 385,000 readers offers the bride-to-be a one-stop shop for everything she needs to plan her big day.

Melissa Saint-Cyr and Derrick Ward, winners of 2008 Destination Wedding Sweepstakes, exchanged nuptials at Hermitage Bay.

We were married on June 23, 2007 and things have been going very well for us since. We have done some traveling and saw many places, but nothing like Antigua. We often take out the pictures of our visit and think about the people and places we saw. It was amazing!

We have added an addition to our family, Derrick Jr. is our primary focus at this point. He is 19 months now. We want to thank you again for allowing us the privilege of having our Destination Wedding in Antigua and we plan to return.

Thank you for an experience of a lifetime. If you ever need spokespersons let us know.  Myreon and I talk about our experiences almost daily with our clients and we also send them to Antigua. Thank you, again!
