CRIME STOPPERS FIRST YEAR ANNIVERSARY
Monday 23rd November 2009

Crime Stoppers Antigua officially launched on 6th November 2008 is  now one year later, planning a Cocktail Party to celebrate its first anniversary and to bring together the community at large in support of this critical organization. To be held on 3rd December 2009 at the new Tides Restaurant at Dutchman’s Bay, the party will serve two purposes – firstly to raise much needed funds to allow the organization to continue its awareness campaigns and secondly to provide rewards for information received and ultimately to engage both the business and general community in the serious business of putting a stop to the rising crime in Antigua and Barbuda.

A year on from its inception, the organization through its police representative Sergeant Lawrence Clarke has made presentations to students in many of the island’s schools, attended neighbourhood watch meetings, community meetings and many island events to spread the word. Awareness of the programme is now much higher, but the general public still remains a little uncertain as to the anonymity of the call service offered. In speaking with Sergeant Clarke he explains that “Crime Stoppers Antigua provides a telephone number 800-TIPS (8477) which persons can call to give any information that they may have about a crime that has been committed or  information about a person they believe has committed a crime. If you are at the scene of a crime, or witnessing a crime, then 911 is still the emergency number to use. Crime Stoppers is there as a service for persons wishing to remain anonymous but who have vital information, no matter how small, that may help with apprehending criminals.” Clarke re-iterates “The information that we receive at Crime Stoppers is rarely of the ‘who did it’ variety, but usually small details such as a car number, description of a person involved in a criminal act, suspicion of or knowledge of someone who has committed a crime, and although on its own is not enough to make an arrest once included with other evidence can be enough to set the police on the right track for an investigation and lead to an eventual arrest.’

When asked, but what about the police, will they do anything with the information?' he says’ My role is to channel the information to the officer in charge of the case and then follow up on that information to ensure it has been investigated.  We need more people to utilize the service and give us information which the police can use. Over time the quantity and effectiveness of tips is improving as the police are getting used to how the system works’.
Clarke also re-iterates ‘What do you have to lose? If you make the call, or indeed visit the website
www.crimestoppersantigua.com to give a tip, the information is submitted completely anonymously, we can never trace it back to you, in fact we have absolutely no interest in who you are, we merely want your information.” Tickets for the Cocktail Party are $EC125 inclusive of hors d’oeuvres and drinks and can be purchased from the Antigua Hotels and Tourist Association on Newgate Street, Antigua Nice Ltd. in Falmouth, or by calling 764-8477.

Please come and support this much needed fundraiser. Crime is an unfortunate part of people's lives worldwide. In Antigua and Barbuda, we are a small community, many people have knowledge, no matter how small, of crimes committed and who committed them. Funds raised by this event will be used by Crime Stoppers to continue to spread the message into the communities and networks on the island, where people have information, and convince them that using Crime Stoppers is a positive step forward in their fight against crime.
