GOLF FOR EDUCATION TOURNAMENT A HUGE SUCCESS
Monday 12th November 2012

The International Women’s Club of Antigua “Golf for Education” fundraiser held Saturday, 3rd of November at the Cedar Valley Golf Club was a huge success, netting more than $30,000 for their marquis programme — the Scholarship Fund.

“2012 is a record-setting year for the golf fundraiser, which has seen more golfers, more sponsors, bigger and better auction items, and more money raised than ever before,” a beaming Cath White, Secretary of the IWC and Chief Organizer of the tournament says.

“All the holes were taken [by sponsors], and unfortunately, we had to turn away golfers who showed up at the last minute, but the teams were already set. Next year, we hope we can remedy this by changing the formats so that more golfers can participate.”

Two teams tied for 1st Gross, but on a count back, Kevin Hosam, Vincent James, Dion Massiah and Selwyn Samuel emerged the winners, with Otis Thomas, Omarry James, Stanley Yang and Ralph Francis in 2nd place. Net winners were the teams of Vere Small, Gregory Georges, Stan Frederick and Wesley Dyer at 1st Net, with Alan Matthew, Dougie O’Brien, Connie Nicholas and Hugh Gore at 2nd Net.

It is worth reiterating that sponsors attract coverage of the best type, from the world of sports as well as education, and so the Club is proud to have the returning support of Virgin Atlantic Airways, and the first-time support of Scotiabank, both of whom are very committed to local causes for education.   In addition to educational scholarships, our sponsorship funds support adult literacy and dyslexia.

Beverley Layne,  Marketing and Sales Manager – Caribbean, and Reina Hinds, Sales Manager — Antigua presented two Premium Economy Return Tickets to London to Marie Kinsella who was the highest bidder for this hot auction item, and Wilston Charles was the lucky winner of a second pair of Premium Economy Return tickets to London in the Champagne Draw.

Lots of other great auction items were available this year including a Sony Bravia 32-inch flatscreen TV, generously donated by Townhouse Mega Store, an all-inclusive overnight stay for 2 at Jumby Bay donated by Rosewood Resorts, a case of 6 bottles of Boutique Champagne from AS Bryden and Sons, Ltd., an overnight Bed and Breakfast Deluxe King Suite with Plunge Pool at Sugar Ridge Antigua, jewellery from Sterlings and Caribbean Gems, 2 nights at Tradewinds Hotel, a round of golf for 4 with carts from the St. Kitts Marriott, ladies and men’s Guess Watches from Colombian Emeralds, a sunset cruise from Captain Nash Edwards, and a catamaran trip from Wadadli Cats, dinner vouchers from top resorts like Sandals, NonSuch Bay, Pepperz ‘N Lime, Café Bambula, Mr. Chippys’ and Putters, adventure experiences from Caribbean Helicopters, the Antigua Rainforest Canopy, Antigua Clays, Outdoor World, Stingray City and Miguel’s Prickly Pear Island, Spa treatments from Crystal Clear Antigua and Equilibrium, and hand-made pottery from Sarah Fuller.

“This golf tournament is fast becoming more and more popular each year,” White declares. “We continue to attract lots of businessmen-golfers and representatives from the corporate community. With plans in the works for a first-class Golf Club and enhancements to the course itself, we plan to work even more closely with Cedar Valley Golf to consider hosting a youth tournament, and continue now and in the future to expand and attract young golfers to the event, and also young women to IWC’s membership.

The International Women’s Club of Antigua and Barbuda was founded in 1986 as the American Women’s Club, with the purpose of enabling American women and wives of Americans to become acquainted with each other, and to create a forum in which the membership could enjoy the history, culture and landscape of the island.  Members later voted to change the name to the International Women’s Club of Antigua & Barbuda to accommodate the diversity of members the Club started to attract.

Members pay dues, and the Club has a President, a Board, a monthly newsletter, book club, a “lunch bunch”, golfing, Mah Jong groups, and has produced a 2-volume cook book “From Market to Table.”  In addition to the Golf Tournament, which specifically benefits the Scholarship Fund, the IWC has several fundraisers each year, including a Jumble Sale coming up on November 17th to raise funds for its annual Christmas Hampers for the needy.

Scholarships were awarded starting in 1994. At that time, the Club gave two scholarships per year to students entering Antigua State Collage and the award of $1,000 US each, covered the tuition amount.  When the IWC begun major fundraising events and auctions, the amounts increased.  In one given year, the IWC awarded more than EC$100,000 in scholarships. In the past few years, the average total amount awarded was EC$40,000 annually to 8 to12 recipients. To date, the Club has awarded almost EC$1.2 million and approximately 300 scholarships.
