ANTIGUA & BARBUDA HUMANE SOCIETY

ABOUT THE ANTIGUA & BARBUDA HUMANE SOCIETY

Antigua & Barbuda Humane Society Inc, established in 1991, is an animal welfare organization making a difference for all animals in Antigua and Barbuda through the prevention of cruelty and the protection of animals. The Humane Society is registered as a non-profit corporation under the laws of Antigua & Barbuda and is audited annually by Grant Thornton.

We foster appropriate relationships, between humans and animals, and encourage responsible animal ownership. We also support government and community institutions with matters relating to the role of animals in society and are committed to assisting our own public and visitors with their concerns about animals.

We encourage compassion for animals and are particularly concerned to instill kindness to animals in our children. We have found that children are more open to developing healthy, positive relationships with animals and with each other, when they learn to be compassionate towards animals from a young age.

The Team at the Humane Society works extremely hard and is very solutions driven. Despite challenges we may face from natural disasters and financial issues, we remain committed to working towards our goals.

The Humane Society is the Registration Agent for the Dog Registration & Control Authority and as such manages the mandatory microchipping and licensing of all dogs over the age of 6 months.

Goals

  • increasing responsible pet ownership and reducing the number of abandoned companion animals
  • Managing the stray animal population on the island by finding suitable homes
  • Ensuring that all dogs over the age of 6 months are microchipped and registered as required by law
  • Increasing awareness of humane animal care to the public
  • Providing relief to animals in distress from man-made or natural disasters

Projects
Our major ongoing projects include:

  • The operation of an animal shelter for cats and dogs
  • The operation of Antigua’s Donkey Sanctuary, home to approximately 150 donkeys. Visitors to the Donkey Sanctuary learn an appreciation of the special role donkeys have played in the development of our country.
  • Regular low-cost spay and neuter clinics for dogs and cats.
  • Take Me Home/ re-homing adoption programme for the cats and dogs in our shelter
  • A continual education outreach programme to sensitize the public on the humane treatment and best quality of life for animals. We keep up-to-date on modern methods of animal care and continually improve our programmes.
  • Renovation of small studio apartment for overseas volunteers
  • Construction of dog kennels on Barbuda

ABOUT ANTIGUA’S DONKEY SANCTUARY
The Antigua & Barbuda Humane Society operates Antigua’s Donkey Sanctuary, currently home to more than 150 donkeys. The Sanctuary welcomes visitors and is favourite stop for children and adults alike. It offers families a wonderful alternative to another day on the beach. Hotel guests often make return visits during their stay just to spend some more time with our donkeys.

The Humane Society plans to gradually bring all stray and roaming donkeys into the Sanctuary in order to keep them safe. In addition to providing limited on-site grazing and carrying water to them, the Humane Society also cuts and carries guinea grass and corn to the donkeys every day. The Society has received occasional grants for fencing projects and shelter construction but providing the necessary labour to feed the donkeys is primarily the Humane Society’s responsibility.

OPENING HOURS
The Humane Society’s animal shelter and Antigua’s Donkey Sanctuary are open to the public Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm.
