NOW ANYONE CAN SAIL THE ATLANTIC EVEN IF THEY DON'T HAVE A BOAT!
Tuesday 1st October 2013

Miramar Sailing is delighted to announce that we have entered our Volvo Ocean 60 "Cuba Libre" into the Christmas Caribbean Rally. This transatlantic rally organised by the team at Sailing Rallies will leave Marina Rubicon, Lanzarote on Monday 16th December 2013 to sail the 2850 miles across the Atlantic and arrive in Jolly Harbour, Antigua in time for the New Year.

“Cuba Libre” is one of the legendary Volvo Ocean 60 transatlantic race yachts. She is a Bruce Farr design and CSA rated at 1.158 in Racing Class. She has a tremendous pedigree.

In 1999, racing under the guise of “Nokia” she won the Sydney – Hobart race in a record breaking time of 1 day, 19 hours, 48 minutes and 2 seconds. The previous Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race record of 2 days, 14 hours, 7 minutes, 10 seconds had been set by Morning Glory in 1996. “Nokia’s” new record was to stand until 2005 when Wild Oats XI beat it by 1 hour, 8 minutes.

The Christmas Caribbean Rally 2013 is an exciting new sailing rally crossing the Atlantic, taking place at the end of 2013 and organised by Sailing Rallies.  They have set the timing of this Transatlantic crossing to use the natural rhythm of the seasons to optimum effect; when the trade winds are likely to be fully established and the hurricane season is behind us. What an exciting way to spend Christmas and New Year!

For this transatlantic race, "Cuba Libre" races with a maximum crew of 16, and a minimum crew of 10, including the skipper, with accommodation on board for 12.
