AUTHOR, FREELANCE WRITER, EDITOR
Antiguan writer Joanne C. Hillhouse’s The Boy from Willow Bend returned to the marketplace in 2009. It has been added to the Antigua and Barbuda schools’ reading list; and has been described as “a poignant and insightful coming-of-age story in which every child will be able to see him/herself” (Books and Nook Corner, USA).
It is, also, a good read for anyone, of any age who likes a story that’s “…well crafted, lively and absolutely believable” (The Daily Observer, Antigua), no matter where they’re from. “The characters in Hillhouse’s book feel real and, best of all, they feel Caribbean, but the story could have held up in any culture” (Trinidad Guardian).
“[It is] a story of the triumph of spirit over situation” (She Caribbean, St. Lucia).
The Boy from Willow Bend [2009 edition] hit the local market in summer and the international market in the following months. Pick up a copy of this and Hillhouse’s other book Dancing Nude in the Moonlight – described as “simple and poetic” (Outlet) and “lyrical, sensual and gentle” (The Caribbean Writer Volume 19).
Hillhouse can also put her writing and editing skills to work for you. Her clients have included the Commonwealth Youth Programme, ABI Financial Group, Catamaran Hotel, Caribbean Family Planning Affiliation, AIDS Secretariat, El A Kru, Cable & Wireless, Antigua and Barbuda Development Bank, Journeycakes author Monica Matthew, and others. She’s written features for Amèricas, Caribbean Beat, She Caribbean, and other publications; her column, Creative Space is featured in the LIAT In-Flight magazine.
