“CREATING UNITY THROUGH DIVERSITY”
The Shiva School of Dance presented itself to the Antiguan community on November 20th 2000. Since then the company has become a household name offering a kaleidoscope of cultural performances at various functions and ceremonies all over the island.
Tavia Hunte, director of the school, holds a Bachelor Degree in Dance Education from the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston, Jamaica. Her advancement in the field of dance education has further benefited the school in expanding their creative expression of dance as art and further uses it as a tool for educating and transforming the society.
The styles of dance range from Caribbean folk to modern contemporary dance, and this is what makes the school stand out in its unique ability to present all the cultural forms of dance which range from African Caribbean, Indian to Chinese and belly dance.
This is in keeping with the motto of the school “Creating Unity Through Diversity”. One of the main aims of the school is to develop a respect and appreciation of all cultures removing stigmas and stereo types therefore fostering togetherness of the races.
The performing core of the company presently consists of 10 dancers who perform for both public and private events. The school however presently has over 90 students ages ranging from 3 to 72 years. Classes are conducted five days a week from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm facilitating classes for the respective groups and levels.
