ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF SPORTS APPOINTED Monday 4th February 2013
Sports personality, Paul Hewlett has been appointed Assistant Director of Sports in the BVI department of Youth Affairs and Sports.
While no official announcement has been made, Hewlett recently addressed an anti-doping forum on January 25, as a representative of the Ministry of Sports.
Hewlett, who is known as ‘Paul On The Ball’, was recently voted as Public Relations Officer for the BVI Horse Owners’ Association. He also serves as Public Relations Officer of the BVI Athletics Association and is a co-host of the ‘Sports Desk’ television programme. Hewlett excelled in Track & Field, Basketball, Handball, Volleyball, a former BVI National Football Player and a former President of the BVI Cricket Board.
Hewlett graduated in 1980 from the then BVI High School after returning from Antigua where he attended the St. Joseph’s Academy. He also attended the Bletchley College in the United Kingdom. Hewlett returned to teach and coach at the St. Joseph’s Academy in the 1990’s.
However, it was while in England that Hewlett had the opportunity to train with some of Britain’s top athletes like Daley Thompson and Linford Christie. He also trained and competed throughout the United Kingdom with the Enfield Harriers Track Team, Milton Keynes and Harringay Track Team.
Hewlett will serve under PatrickHarrigan, who is currently the Acting Director of Sports & Youth Affairs. There have been concerns about Harrigan’s continued acting position since 2006 and calls have been made for him to be appointed as the substantive Director of the Department.
Speaking to the CPTSA Newsletter, Hewlett commented that “20 years ago, Antigua was the powerhouse of the OECS and cer-tainly the trendsetter in the Leeward Islands. Today, Antigua is just a shadow of that, with no programs being established and no one really thinking out of the box.
“Antigua has always had much talent and would be better served beginning to focus on the Field Events athletes and more importantly, ensuring that Field Events are a major part of Inter-Schools Sports,” said Hewlett.
“Long gone are the days of Alfred Brown, Lester Benjamin and Andy Christian. No Field Events at all and everyone just wants to be the next Baca Bailey, who has himself underachieved,” offered Hewlett. Click here for all News and Specials for CPTSA Wings Sports Club
