TRAVEL BACK IN TIME
Captain Colin and his competent crew take guests out on the water for a historical tour, from a different angle. Set out on a spacious boat with lots of seating and enjoy refreshing sea breezes as you explore St. John’s Harbour. Upon boarding, you are offered complementary drinks; a selection of hard and soft, including a delicious rum punch or fruit punch. There is seating in the shade downstairs, or if you prefer an even better view, head upstairs and enjoy the tour with zero obstruction. The boat is equipped with two bathrooms downstairs for customer comfort and is licensed to carry 65 passengers.
The tour begins and we start off going along the coast and learning about the history of St. John’s Harbour. On arriving at the first point of interest, Rat Island, a very informative description about the island's current and past uses and significance is announced over the loudspeakers. The tour continues in this fashion, giving descriptions of each feature in sight. Take a trip to the past, back to the 1700’s, when Fort James had 10 fully functioning cannons but never engaged in battle, and when Fort Barrington was referred to as “The Queen’s Battery” because of all the action it got. Did you know that Fort Barrington was one of the most defensive forts on island in those times? It was, and these are just a few little facts about the History of St. John’s Harbour guests can learn on this tour.
On days of clear visibility, guests can be lucky enough to see our neighbouring Caribbean islands of St. Kitts and Nevis, as well as Montserrat, and her majestic volcano puffing in the distance. During the tour, there are images of historical sites and points around Antigua being shown on a large flat screen, which is a nice addition for an occasional glance. Between site descriptions and historical facts, guests can enjoy some exciting Caribbean music to add even more excitement to the mix.
The tour travels out to the mouth of the harbour, turning at Fort Barrington and continuing down the coast and back to dock. It lasts a bit over an hour and costs only US$19.95 per person. After the tour, head over to King’s Casino for a free drink and spin on their lucky wheel!
Come on out for a truly unique tour. Learn about the history of the harbour and gain a completely different perspective on the attractions surrounding it. Travel back in time and get a feel for the harbour in days of defense.
