HILL TOP WINS WARRIORS CUP AT FIRST ATTEMPT
Friday 16th September 2011

Hill Top capped a fine performance in the Warriors Cup 2011 as they defeated Swetes 2-0 Thursday to win the Men’s Championship Cup at the English Harbour Playing Field.

Tavin Crump and Nyque Watkins scored the goals that spurred the Grays Green team to their title as they netted at the end of each of half.

Crump capitalized on a fast-break move that caught the Swetes defense flatfooted as his shot which was partially saved by the goalkeeper crept over the goal-line on the stroke of half-time to put Hill Top 1-0.

Watkins, a late second-half substitute, sealed the trophy at the death when he beat the off-side trap to steer the ball into the opposite corner from the right.

Swetes, who like Hill Top had progressed to the final unbeaten, were a shadow of the team that scored 20 goals in winning their five matches.

“It feels good to win the tournament because we always felt we could have won it,” said Elease Richardson, the president of Hill Top, after her team was presented with the championship trophy after the finals.

Swetes manager Ray Anthony blamed his players’ lack of practice for their downfall.
“Although we won our first five matches we were not practicing and that showed especially in the second half,” Anthony added.

Organisers say there will be an official prize giving ceremony in a couple of weeks to recognize the winners, top individual players and sponsors.

Additional support for the Warriors Cup has been provided by INET, Super Power Electronics Plus, Paradiso Water, Wadadli Cats, Horizons, Bigs Car Rental.
