The RRYC was launched on the evening of
February 29th at the renowned Playbach Club in Falmouth.
Some of the new members jubilantly declared that since
they joined on the 29th, Leap Year, they won't be liable
to pay their next annual fee until 2004. They finally
conceded, on a threat of beheading by King Robert the
Bald that this idea, however creative, was patently
unfair - the Court must eat.
H.M. told the assembled throng that there are loads of
events planned for the year including volleyball contests
on the beach, raft races (including a substantial prize
for cheating), pool competitions with challenge matches
with the Royal Naval Tot Club and other groups, the RRYC
Round the Island Race (Blake Island in Falmouth Bay), and
eventually a Round Redonda Race (redonda meaning, of
course, "round" in Spanish. The island was
named by
Columbus during his second voyage after a small round
church in Seville).
Although a few members are Honorary Life Members most of
the sixty-nine new members are looking forward to a
season suddenly filled with fun and games, and music from
Sir "Fingers" Montlake.
H.M.was carried on the throne onto the Playbach terrace
overlooking Falmouth Marina by four powerful stalwarts
with head-dresses made from Royal Yacht "St.
Peter" t-shirts, a number of which were sold through
the
evening (t-shirts, not the stalwarts). Yellow Club
burgees showing the island boobie wearing a crown were
sold and a few of the first batch are still available.
During the investiture Dame Geoffrey Pidduck was
reinvented and dubbed Lord Geoffrey of Pidduck, Admiral
of the Fleet. He misconstrued the occasion and as he
approached the throne he kneeled and put his head on a
block. Calls
for a basket were made and the King shouted to Connie
Bowen (wife of Kapt.Terencz Bowenovitch of the Bulgarian
Navy) to comence knitting.
Nicholas Montlake the skilled entrepreneur of Playbach
was knighted for his extraordinary services to the
Kingdom and the RRYC Secretary Pam Buckley finally became
a Lady (oh, perhaps I should rephrase that) for her
amazing
organisational party skills. Doctor Sir Philip Hopton was
due to have his warrant dubbed in confirmation by the
King's huge sword but it seems that H.M.'s brain was
befuddled by too many Diet Cokes and he simply forgot.
Don't worry Hopton old chap, next time.
