The King and Queen of Redonda were
present at a special evening event at the famous yachtie
restaurant Abracadabra in Nelson's Dockyard. It was, for
the first time, the investiture of Paulo Caputo, one of
the revered owners, making him the first Cavalier of
Redonda. Needless to say the event was sponsored by
Cavalier Rum so in time there will probably be an entire
regiment of Cavaliers to rival the Redondan Alpine
Brigade. Sir Nicholas Montlake of piano and Playbach fame
handled the Mastership of Ceremonies inhis usual witless
style and panache.
After the knighting of Paulo there followed a rowdy
series of sporting events which began around midnight and
included a sack race and tug o'war. The horde of yachties
present at the Games were nothing if not indefatiguable.
The RRYC has also begun a weekly volleyball event every
Sunday on Pigeon Beach, organised by Lady Pamela Buckley.
Two dark-suited gents tried to stop the first match on
the grounds that to have fun on a beach on Sunday was
unconstitutional but they were shouted down and left
toshuffle away, their shoes and resolve filled with sand.
On April 21st from 2pm to 5pm there will be another event
at Falmouth Harbour Marina sponsored by Playbach and the
Royal Redondan Yacht Club called the Falmouth Dockside
Party. There will be food and beverages and
games. The King and Queen will be in attendance to greet
their loyal subjects and anyone who wishes to join the
RRYC, buy a club burgee or a t-shirt and generally swear
allegiance to the idea of good sportsmanship and having
fun.
Future events are in various planning stages including
the RRYC Round the Island Race (Blake Island in Falmouth
Harbour). The Royal Yacht "St. Peter" is having
her new engine fitted as we write and so might be ready
for Classic Week. It is hoped it will run so quietly that
she will make it around the Classic courses on bare poles
alone with nobody the wiser and thus win every trophy.
