"A
PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS"
| How do
feel about Guiding in Antigua and Barbuda
or your country? Just think! New skills
were realized, money was raised, and fun
was had by all as the Girl Guide
Association of Antigua and Barbuda joined
the rest of the world in commemorating
World Thinking Day - February 22nd - with
a satisfying series of activities. |

"Presenting...Members
of The Junior Council, presented to the
Girl Guide Association Members on World
Thinking Day (Saturday 22 February 2003). |
Held this time
around under the theme, 'A Penny For Your
Thoughts,' which became the catchphrase of the
period's fundraising drive, Thinking Day is a
time to reflect on our Founders, Lord and Lady
Baden-Powell, our Guiding family and others who
we help and who help us.
After nine days of celebrations in Antigua, many
of the girls and young women can boast that
they've found new skills and talents. The Group
from the 6th Antigua Unit at Spring Gardens
Moravian who won the Slogan Competition and the
other competitors know that they have a way with
words as does the participants in the Male
Contributor Profiling project. Some have found
that they're great public speakers and
entertainers. Others realized that they've a
talent for sporting activities or art and music
or outdoor cooking as well as fundraising or
organizing or motivating or selling. It is an
enjoyable experience to see the young ladies take
such pride in the little they have to do in
contributing to making World Thinking Day
celebrations special for all.
The opportunity to make a special promise to do
duty to God and Country and to serve and to keep
Guiding laws in the presence of the Guiding
community was a delightful experience for the 120
new recruits - the largest to be enrolled at any
one time - who made their commitment at the
annual Mass Enrollment Ceremony. This year it was
held on World Thinking Day, with this group
becoming the first to take these vows on this day
in the new uniform. A special feature was the
introduction of the Junior Council to their peers
as their received their landyards.
The "Penny for your Thoughts" campaign,
meanwhile, yielded close to $200 and revealed
positive thoughts on Girl Guiding in Antigua.
The Sex forum drew lots of insightful comments on
the dangers facing young women even as it
afforded the Teen Summit team to share the pilot
of their TV series, which is still in production.
The participation of other groups businesses and
individuals in these activities was of great
encouragement to the Guides, Leaders and
Administrators.
Though World Thinking Day is the Major event
every year because we share it with the Guides
all around the world; we also share Commonwealth
Day (March 10) with the rest of the Guides in the
Commonwealth, just as we share Caribbean Link Day
(April 22) with the other Guides in the
Caribbean. So as we close the World Thinking Day
chapter of our 2003 Guiding year, we open The
Commonwealth Day chapter. With these links come
other responsibilities, activities, projects and
events dealing with social issues from the Rights
of the Child to the Environment and World Peace.
As Girl Guiding develops and partnerships are
created and maintained, it is the hope of our
girls and young women that we can continue,
"Guiding together forever with thoughts of
peace and unity all over the world", as
stated in the winning slogan.
